BlackBerry Smartphone, Porsche Design P9981

The BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9981 is built on a performance driven platform that features a 1.2 GHz processor, HD video recording, 24-bit high resolution graphics, and advanced sensors enabling new augmented reality applications. It comes with 8GB of on-board memory, expandable up to 40GB with a micro SD card.

The P’9981 from the 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor/chipset to the 640×480 resolution touch-screen display to the location of all the buttons and ports and even the camera location, the P’9981 is basically a 9900 stripped down to its guts and fitted into a new chassis with different trimmings all around.

Superior BlackBerry performance and elegant Porsche Design styling place the P’9981 Smartphone in a class of its own. An enhanced 1.2 GHz processor and 8 GB of on-board memory power a responsive and nimble browsing experience. Additional 16GB micro SD included in box.

New features and innovative apps like Wikitude create deeper, more dynamic ways to interact with the world. And with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology built right in, you can link up with other NFC-enabled devices or authentic BlackBerry accessories.

Shape and share your world via Augmented Reality. The Wikitude World Browser app helps you find, identify, access, and forward relevant information instantly. Read reviews on restaurants, theaters and VIP events as you find them.

Pros:

  • Made with high-quality materials
  • Offers same performance as Bold 9900
  • Above average battery life
  • You feel like the man walking around with a $2,000 phone
  • It’s a conversation starter. This phone gets noticed
  • Awesome packaging – it’s like opening a luxury watch box
  • If you meet another person using a P’9981, you’ll instantly be friends

Cons:

  • Functionality doesn’t justify the cost
  • Keyboard isn’t as easy to use as Bold 9900
  • No improvement in components
  • It’s really expensive, and despite the increased price isn’t really better than the Bold 9900
  • Software updates lag that of the Bold 9900 – they’ll come, but it’s still on OS 7.0
  • No autofocus on the camera
  • Removing microSD card can be slightly tricky

Bottomline: The Porsche Design P’9981 is little more than a luxury BlackBerry Bold 9900, and will appeal only to a select few.
